The Benefits of Drinking Tea Everyday- 5 Reasons I’ve Experienced

Moving to the UK was the trigger for my tea journey. I drank the hot beverage occasionally in the past growing up.

Although I have experienced firsthand the benefits of drinking tea everyday, it became my new normal after relocating to the UK to pursue my studies. I drank the hot beverage occasionally in the past, however, it became a way to warm up as I adjusted to the cold climate in the UK.

Tea has been part of my routine now for 10+ years now. I primarily drink it for the taste and flavour. I was therefore happy to discover the benefits of drinking tea everyday.

Tea for me was originally part of my morning routine but it has rotated over the years and in this season it is now more a part of my nightly wind-down routine. However, whatever is your preferred time to enjoy your cup of tea, the benefits of drinking tea everyday still apply. Here are 5 reasons that I have personally experienced:

5 Benefits of Drinking Tea Everyday

1/ Tea Helps to Keep You Hydrated

I currently live in the Caribbean so it’s hot year-round. It’s therefore important for me to drink fluids to keep hydrated. I try to stay away from soda and other sweet drinks so I mostly drink water. Tea fits the bill being primarily water and it helps me break up the monotony of water which can grow old after a while. Luckily I don’t have problems drinking hot tea in hot weather so  I enjoy trying various favours and I’m always on the lookout for new flavours to try.

2/ Tea Aids in Digestion

I find that peppermint tea particularly is a great beverage to have after a meal as not only do I love the flavour, it helps aid the digestion process for my body. On the occasion that my stomach is upset, I find that drinking a cup of peppermint tea also works to soothe and settle my stomach. Drinking tea on an empty stomach has also been a helpful reset digestion wise at times. In addition, tea also serves to fill me up and decrease the amount of snacking I do between meals.

3/ Tea can be Calorie Free

I drink my tea without sugar and often without milk. This way, I gain all the health benefits of drinking tea everyday without also taking in unnecessary calories. On the occasions when I add milk (a low-fat version), I use a small amount to keep the calorie count low. When I am on a strict diet, herbal teas are a great default in my day. They work to help me feel full and drinking them plain (no sugar or milk) means that they are essentially “free” drinks as I do not need to account for any calories from them. When you’re restricting calories in other areas, it’s a blessing to have foods that are unlimited.

4/ Tea is Easy to Make

This benefit kicks in when time is not on your side as this is one of the quickest beverages to make. The longest time in the process is the time it takes for the water to boil. With a little planning, this time can be used effectively. For example, in the morning I use that time to prepare what I need for my tea (mug, teabag and maybe milk). Then I start preparing what I will have for breakfast. During the day at work, I put on the water to boil. While I wait for the kettle to whistle I complete some short tasks. In the evening or night, I may spend the time reading a few pages of a book or catching up on social media.

5/ Tea is a Health Boost

Of all the many benefits of drinking tea every day, this one is the best in my opinion. Tea, especially green tea contains antioxidants which form part of a healthy diet and assist in protecting the body. There has been research conducted that suggests that green tea may be able to reduce the risk of certain cancers (Read more here). Also, tea can help in weight loss efforts as I have experienced. In my nutrition, I commonly use it as a healthy substitute for sweet drinks. These are just a few of the health benefits associated with tea.
